A myxoma (Latin from Greek 'muxa' is mucus) is a myxoid tumour of primitive [1] connective tissue defined by Virchow. Rudolph Virchow coined the term "myxoma" to describe a soft tissue tumour that histologically resembled the structure of the umbilical cord. Myxomas are benign, with the presence of epithelial, mesenchymal, endothelial, myofibroblastic, and neuroendocrine proteins in immunohistochemistry suggesting primordial pluripotent mesenchymal cells. The five types naming intramuscular myxoma, juxta-articular myxoma, superficial angiomyxoma, aggressive angiomyxoma and myxoid neurothekeoma are regarded as the mainstream soft tissue myxomas. Myxomas are defined as soft tissue tumours and have a common histologic appearance of myxoid ground material & shows a characteristic histopathological finding due to the presence of significant amount of [3] myxomatous connective tissue bounded by collagen fibres. Histological criteria for the diagnosis of myxoma was proposed by Stout deeming it as a true neoplasm of mesenchymal origin composed of undifferentiated stellate cells in a myxoid stroma with delicate reticulin fibers. Intraoralsoft tissue myxoma is frequently misdiagnosed and difficult to distinguish from other tumours. It is a slow-growing, benign mesenchymal tumour that is extremely rare among the several types of soft tissue myxoma. It can be odontogenic or nonodontogenic myxoma based on origin. Histologically they can be differentiated with the help of haematoxylin & eosin. The presence of odontogenic epithelium is classic feature which can be used for diagnosis & categorization.
