A memory in terms of computer hardware is a storage unit. A memory
used in electronically devices stores data in a matrix of cells. The data
consists of a logical "1" or "0". There are many different types of
hardware used for storage, such as magnetic hard drives and tapes,
optical discs such as CDs and DVDs, and electronic memory in form of
integrated memory or stand-alone chips. An electronic memory is
used to store data or programs, and is a key component in all
computers today. It is built up of small units called bits which can hold
one binary symbol of data (referred to as a '1' or a '0'). These bits are then
grouped together into bytes (8 bits) or words (usually in the range of 16-
64 bits). Semiconductor memories are most often classified on the
basis of memory functionality, access patterns, and the nature of the
storage mechanism. A memory where we can read the stored data
only is called Read-Only Memory (ROM).
