Periodontal diseases are those diseases that affects one or more, periodontal tissues such as gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone. Periodontitis is a common, complex inflammatory periodontal disease characterized by destruction of tooth-supporting soft and hard tissue of periodontium and eventually may lead to the loss of teeth. Periodontitis affects 30-50% of adult population with 7-15% of adults suffering from its sever form and relatively few patients receive adequate treatment.Bacterial plaque is considered to be the commonest etiological factor in development of periodontitis. However, periodontitis is multifactorial disease where in microbial species, host immune responses and ecosystem based factors are responsible for its development.

Dr. Girish Suragimath, , MDS is Professor and Head, Department of Periodontology, School of Dental sciences, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed to be University, Karad, Maharashtra, India. He completed his BDS in 1994 and MDS (Periodontology) in 1999 from KLE Vishwanath Katti Institute of Dental Sciences, Belgaum, Karnataka. He has been an active teacher since 1999 and teaches both undergraduate and post graduate students. He is a PhD guide at KIMSDU. He has 90+ research publications, many books and patent to his credit. He has guided a lot of students in conducting research projects and develops research aptitude to improve the overall understanding of the subject. Area of interest include: Biomarkers for detection of periodontal disease; Periodontal Medicine; Implantology; Laser applications; Forensic Odontology; Gene and gene therapy; Herbal medicines in treatment of periodontal diseases.

Dr. A Siddhartha Varma, BDS, MDS, PGDMLE is Reader and PG guide in Department of Periodontology, School of Dental sciences, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed to be University, Karad, Maharashtra, India. He completed his BDS in 2005 and MDS in Periodontology and Implantology in 2010 from PMNM Dental College and Hospital under RGUHS, Karnataka, India. He has 40+ national and international publications to his credit. He is also acting as Editorial member and reviewer for various national and international journals. Areas of research intertest include influence of periodontal inflammation on systemic health, oral implants, role of alternative medication in periodontal management. He is currently pursuing PhD program in Interdisciplinary Dentistry at KIMSDU, Karad.
