World Commission on Environment and Development (1987) defines sustainable development as “the development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable development is based on principles of sound husbandry of the world’s resources and equity - the way these resources are used and how the benefits obtained from them are distributed. There are three dimensions or pillars of sustainable development. These are economic sustainability, environmental sustainability, and social sustainability. Sustainable development strives to strike a balance among these interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars of development.
