The Kottar Social Service Society concentrated on the fishermen along the
coast. They were condemned to live in misery and poverty. There was no peace
in the coastal villages. Man has always yearned for peace, unfortunately peace
has been an elusive thing. When peace retreats, development process comes to
a grinding halt, as peace and development always go hand in hand. The fisher
folk too have many conflicts, crying for quick peaceful solution, so that
development activities will not be adversely affected.¹ The Society, realising the
need for establishing peace in that coastalareas and lounging the conflicts to an
end, started Coastal Peace and Development in 1995 with two major objectives.
