Introduction Pharmacology is the science dealing with various aspects of drugs. The word is derived from Greek words; Pharmacon- drug and logos- discourse in. Drug: According to the World Health Organization Scientific definition (1966), “Drug is any substance or product that is used or intended to be used to modify or explore physiological systems or pathological states for the benefit of the recipient.” Categories of the drugs: 1. Non-prescription drugs: Safe drugs and can be sold over the counter (OTCs) by the chemist without prescription. e.g. vitamins, antacids, etc. 2. Prescription drugs: Drugs classified in various Schedules and Drug acts. Should be used under medical supervision and to be dispensed only on the order of registered medical practioner. e.g. antibiotics, antihypertensive drugs, etc.

Dr. Satish Eknath Bahekar completed his MBBS and MD (Pharmacology) from Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sewagram, Wardha (M.S.) and Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital & Healthcare Management (PGDHHM) from Symbiosis Centre of Health Care, Pune (M.S.). He had worked as Assistant Professor Pharmacology at SMBT Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Center, Nashik (M.S.). Apart from academics, he had worked in many other areas like Institutional Ethics Committee, Bioethics Committee, Research cell, MCI coordination Cell etc. Currently he is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at Government Medical College Aurangabad, Maharashtra. He is working as Editor in Chief for one international medical Journal. He is associated with many National and International medical journals in the capacities of reviewer, editorial board member and advisory member. He has twenty five publications as original research articles, short communications, review articles and case reports in various highly indexed National & International medical journals including PUBMED. He had attended many National & International CMEs, conferences, workshops and presented many presentations and posters. He is life time member of Indian Pharmacological Society (IPS). Currently he is associated with the project titled “Surveillance of Antibiotic Consumption in Healthcare Facilities using AMC Tool” being conducted by Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs (DSPRUD) New Delhi under the aegis of MHFW GOI, USAID, NCDC and WHO. His areas of interest are Pharmacovigilance, Clinical Research, Medical Education & Technology, Bioethics and Animal Experimentations.
