medicines, dyes, and other purposes. While the Ethnobotany of these products is often well known, the ecological and economic aspects rainforest trees have received much less attention. Such information is needed for specific products to evaluate the sustainability of harvest and commercial viability of selling the processed product under a range of ecological and market conditions. Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) play an important role in supporting the livelihoods of the forest-dependent communities has grown manifolds in the past decade (Belcher et al., 2005; Clendon, 2001). Policymakers, funding organizations, governments and voluntary organizations working in the forestry sector are convinced that sustainable management of NTFPs has become an inseparable part of pro-poor forest management. The forest, especially NTFP plays a crucial role in supporting forest-based livelihoods (Adeyoju, 1975, Leisher and Larsen, 2010). For a long time, lichens have been known as valuable plant resources and still used as a medicine, food, fodder, perfume, spices, and dyes in different parts of the world (Negi, 2003). Though the work has been carried out on ethno- botanical aspects of higher groups of plants the corresponding aspects of lower forms have not received adequate attention. NTFP plays an important role in both national and local economies. In some cases, the importance of these activities can be seen clearly from national statistics. Quantitative studies have not been carried out especially on the Western Ghats; we have a lack of information on production levels, extraction levels, level of local utilization, and quantity being exported and its effect NTFPs or whole NTFPs diversity of the region. The contributions that nontimber forest products (NTFPs) are less ecologically destructivethan timber harvesting. Have more intensive management of forests for such products could contribute to both development and conservation objectives, and have led to initiatives to expand commercial use of NTFPs.
