The police are persons empowered to enforce the law, protect property and reduce civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as organizations separate from any military forces, or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie and military police are military units charged with policing. Police system is a major chunk of criminal justice system in India and also abroad. Sociological to legal, the process of criminalization of an act and its decriminalization is a natural process, and is bound to happen. The criminal justice system is merely a sort of tool in the hand of this natural process. Before an act is criminalized, the society itself tries its best to control it through its inherent forces such as family, peers and social control; only when this mechanism fails, the legal mechanism comes into picture. The same may be criminalized as well.
