Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common form of diabetes, a disorder
characterised by high blood glucose. Pathophysiological abnormalities
noted in type 2 diabetes mellitus are impaired insulin secretion, peripheral
insulin resistance and excessive hepatic glucose production. Along with
type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity and cardiovascular diseases are
commom1. The association of obesity with development of type 2 diabetes
mellitus may be partly mediated by altered secretion of adipokines by
adipose tissue, which is a complex, metabolically highly active organ.
Factors secreted by adipocytes are leptin, adiponectin, plasminogen
activator inhibitor -1 and resistin.2
