Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common form of diabetes, a disorder characterised by high blood glucose. Pathophysiological abnormalities noted in type 2 diabetes mellitus are impaired insulin secretion, peripheral insulin resistance and excessive hepatic glucose production. Along with type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity and cardiovascular diseases are commom1. The association of obesity with development of type 2 diabetes mellitus may be partly mediated by altered secretion of adipokines by adipose tissue, which is a complex, metabolically highly active organ. Factors secreted by adipocytes are leptin, adiponectin, plasminogen activator inhibitor -1 and resistin.2
