Physiological Basis Of Surgical Practice
Surgery is a lifetime event for the patient. Hence the patient must know what is
going to happen during and after the surgery. One must remember that the wish
of the patient is supreme and all information related to the surgical options must
be told to the patient. In the case of an uneducated patient, it is better to involve a
close relative of the patient during the discussion related to surgery. If necessary a
diagram/ chart may be used for a better explanation. The preoperative
assessment must start from the first visit with a systematic examination, of not
only the affected system but all other systems. One must remember that the
complication of a non-affected system will affect the operative outcome. The part
that has undergone surgery may be in perfect condition, but the morbidity and
even mortality may result from a complication of the non-affected system.
Routine evaluations are needed for cardiac, pulmonary, renal, liver, and
hematological evaluation. systems as well as the overall nutritional status of the
patient who is to undergo the surgery
