Mucormycosis (formerly: zygomycosis) is a group of diseases affecting various
anatomical sites. The infections are caused by filamentous fungi of the order
Mucorales, a dominant group among zygosporic fungi which were formerly
[1]
summarized as zygomycetes. The disease name ''Mucormycosis'' was
subsequently used by the American pathologist R. D. Baker to denote a mycosis
[2,3] caused by certain members of Mucorales. The first well-documented case of
disease caused by members of Mucorales was published in 1885 by the German
pathologist Paltauf. It was a systemic infection with gastric and rhino-cerebral
[4] involvement, which Paltauf described as ''Mycosis Mucorina''. Mycotic infection
of the paranasal sinuses was first described in 1893 by Mackenzie. With the rising
fungal infection over the decades, mucormycosis ranks third after candidiasis and
[5]. [16] aspergillosis. Granulomatous fungal sinusitis was reported by Wright in 1927 .
Aspergillus flavus was isolated in most of the cases of granulomatous fungal
sinusitis in Sudan. In 1943 three fatal cases of rhinocerebral mucormycosis,
ophthalmoplegia and proptosis was described in patients having diabetic
[17] [18] ketoacidosis. In 1955, the first cure of mucormycosis was reported by Harris. In
1956 with the invention of Amphotericin B for the treatment of mucormycosis
dramatically decreased the mortality of the disease
