dicotyledonous plant in which underground stems give rise to tubers.
It belongs to the family Solanaceae and it is grown across the world for
its edible tubers. Originally it is an important temperate crop, but well
adopted in sub-tropical conditions. It is one of the major vegetable
grown in the plains during winters and in hills during summer. The
probable centre of origin of potato is in South America located in the
central Andean region. Potato was introduced, by the Portuguese to
India from the Europe in the beginning of the seventeenth century.
