In the stone age, the tools that humans used were of flint and their weapons
of wood edged with sharpened obsidian. There is an evidence that the Maya
and other ancient cultures used ‘bow drills’ and other devices to prepare round
ornamental cavities in teeth. A round hard tube similar to a drinking straw, made
in early times of jade and later of copper, was spun between the hands or in a rope
drill, with a slurry of powdered quartz in water as abrasive, cutting a perfectly
round hole through the enamel and into the dentin. Some early attempts at filling
the teeth are also in evidence.
