Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS)

Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) refer to the comprehensive body of knowledge developed in India over thousands of years, encompassing philosophy, science, arts, literature, medicine, agriculture, governance, and ecology. Unlike modern knowledge systems, which often focus on specialization, IKS emphasizes holistic and integrative learning, where different domains of knowledge are interconnected.

Key Characteristics of IKS:

  • Holistic: Integrates physical, mental, spiritual, and ethical aspects of life.
  • Experiential: Knowledge is derived from observation, experimentation, and reflection.
  • Sustainable: Traditional practices are designed to be in harmony with nature.
  • Multidisciplinary: Combines philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, arts, governance, and more.
  • Ethical and Value-Based: Promotes social and personal values, such as dharma (duty), compassion, and responsibility.
