Of the twentieth century British dramatists, Harold Pinter has attracted a good deal of
critical attention over a span of five decades. He stands out as the most complex,
daring and often elusive of all. He has twenty nine plays, numerous screenplays and
theatre productions to his credit. His activism, especially in favour of the freedom of
expression (articulated more recently, in his anti-Iraq invasion speech at the Nobel
ceremony), has attracted considerable attention. Originally influenced by the Theatre
of the Absurd, his plays are often taken as symbols of anti-traditional protest and
emancipation. Though he is known for his variety and versatility and prolific output,
the present thesis studies only seven of his representative plays – The Birthday Party,
The Caretaker, The Homecoming, No Man’s Land, A Kind of Alaska, Ashes to Ashes,
and Celebration – which overtly connote the three phases in his literary canon. The
book primarily throws light on the growth and development in his career as a
dramatist. Its concern is to exhibit how Pinter in the early phase remained as an
absurdist commenting on the aimlessness in one’s own life, the middle phase
indicating explicitly the memories of the past, and the third phase as a ‘gospeller’ and
political activist overtly championing his message throughout the world.
