Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease of supporting tissues of teeth.
Due to bacterial infection the periodontal tissues become inflamed and
are slowly destroyed by the action of inflammatory process. If Periodontitis
is left untreated, the teeth become loose and are eventually lost leading to
an edentulism state. The knowledge about the pathogenesis of the
periodontal disease is continuously increasing and it is widely accepted
that the differences among the individuals at risk for developing most
diseases have a substantial inherited component. Factors in the
environment such as diet, smoking, preventive care or exposure to
pathogens interacts with the each person's genetic predisposition to
determine his or her health outcome. This complex combination of
variables determine if and when a disease affects the person how fast and
how severely symptoms of the disease progress and how the person
responds to different treatments in terms of both side effects and success
of the alternative therapies
