One should take food in proper quantity. The quantity depends on power of
agnibala (digestive power). Now to understand the proper quantity for
individual it is mentioned in Ayurveda that whatever quantity of food gets
easily digested in time without disturbing the normalcy of doshas and
digestive fires, promotes life-span should be regarded as measured proper
quantity (CS.Vi.1/25(3)). The diets as sali, sastika (varieties of rice), mudga
(pulses) etc are light in nature due to predominance of vayu and agni
mahabhuta (basic elements), which stimulates digestion. Thus even though
taken up to the saturation point produces little derangement. On the other
hand preparations of flour, sugarcane, milk products, tila (sesame), black
gram are heavy in digestion as predominance of prthvi and jala mahabhuta
which are not digestive stimulant.
