Theories of feminism address and investigate issues regarding gender difference, propagating economic, political, and educational equality for women, and campaigning for women's rights and interests. It was said that feminism was first derived from the Latin word “femina”, meaning women. It was conceptualized with a view to providing equality to women and fighting for their rights. The feminist theories have emerged from these feminist movements: the first, second, and third waves of feminism. The first wave took place inlLjJĪBate nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The second wave came during the 1960s and 1970s. It was in the 1990s that the third wave was started that has been continuing to the present time. Feminist scholars have begun to speak of a fourth wave. Before giving an overview of the stages of the development of feminist thought it would be in order to tackle a theoretical problem posed by the choice of a popular and commercially successful woman writer such as Shobha De for inclusion in the feminist canon and for illustration of feminist concerns.
