The contemporary definition coined by Kohlmeyer and Kohlmeyer (1979) divides marine fungi into obligate species, which exclusively grow and sporulate in a marine or estuarine habitat, and facultative species, which are able to grow and possibly also sporulate in the marine environment but are found in terrestrial and freshwater milieus. Hyde et al 2000 has made a suggestion that the ability to germinate and to form mycelium under natural marine conditions may be used as a criterion for the definition of a marine fungus.
