Now a day the term Very-large-scale integration (VLSI) has become an house hold acronym. It is the process of fabricating an integrated circuit (IC) by combining billons of transistors into a single chip. The way to VLSI had begun in the early 1970s when communication and semiconductor technologies were developed. The evolution of VLSI technology was not a task done in a year or so; the first technology in IC fabrication was termed as Small Scale Integration (SSI), followed by Medium Scale Integration (MSI) and Large Scale Integration (LSI). Before the evolution of VLSI technology, most ICs had small number of transistors or limited number of functions they can perform. An electronic circuit mainly consists of a CPU, RAM, ROM and other various logics. In VLSI Technology IC designers incorporates all of these into a single chip.
