Missing teeth is a health problem associated with functional, cosmetic and psychological morbidity. The most common cause of tooth loss is Periodontitis but it can also result due to many disease processes or following any dental trauma,1 other causes include dental caries, developmental defects and genetic disorders. That is when dental implants play a role in providing replacement of missing dentition and restoring the function along with esthetic support in most. Dental implants have become an increasingly common & reliable treatment option in clinical practice as loss of teeth is very common. Tooth loss not only impairs quality of life but also indirectly affects the wellbeing of the individual. The missing teeth affects the day to day activities of individuals like chewing, ability to talk (speech) which results in low self-esteem, loss of confidence, less social interactions and thus hampers the work and daily activities.2,3

Dr. Nikhil Bhalchandra Awale completed his graduation from Bharati Vidyapeet Dental College And Hospital (BVDU), Sangli, Maharashtra, India and post-graduate in Periodontology and Oral Implantology from School of Dental Sciences, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed to be University (KIMSDU), Karad, Maharashtra, India. He also holds PG Diploma in Medico Legal Systems, Law and ethics. He has many publications to his credit. He has special interest in exploring Dental Implant advances and research regarding the same.

Dr. Girish Suragimath

Dr. Girish Suragimath is Professor and Head, Department of Periodontology, School of Dental sciences, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed to be University (KIMSDU), Karad, Maharashtra, India. He completed his BDS in 1994 and MDS (Periodontology) in 1999 from KLE Vishwanath Katti Institute of Dental Sciences, Belgaum, Karnataka. He has been an active teacher since 1999 and teaches both undergraduate and post graduate students in Periodontology. He is a PhD guide at KIMSDU and has students pursuing PhD under him. He has 70 research publications, a book chapter and a patent to his credit. He has a particular interest in research and has been conducting many research projects at his institution and has guided a lot of students in conducting research projects and develops research aptitude to improve the overall understanding of the subject. In addition to this, he has been the Editor of souvenir published during ISPRP 2012 conference and during ISPPD (Indian Society of Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry) PG Convention, 2012. He believes in achieving all round development of students. Hence, apart from all these academic achievements, he also loves running and has keen interest in participating in marathons. He also encourages his students to actively participate in Sports & Cultural Programs held at the university.
